Using Pine to read your Iowa State e-mail

This document describes how to configure Pine, in combination with the kfetchmail package, to read your Iowa State e-mail.

Using kfetchmail

While you will use Pine to read your e-mail, it is the kfetchmail package that will actually download your mail. You will need to have kfetchmail installed and configured properly. See the Using kfetchmail to read your Iowa State e-mail for more information.

Installing Pine

Pine can be obtained from the Dag Wieers software repository. You will need to configure up2date to use the repository as one of its sources. Information on doing that can be found at the Dag Wieers mirror.

Once you are subscribed to the Dag Wieers channel, run the following command as root: up2date -i pine

Configuring Pine

Start up pine with the command pine. The first time you start Pine it will print a welcome message. Type "e" to exit the greeting. You will be presented with the Pine main menu. Select "Setup" and then "Config". Change the following information:

  • personal-name: You do not have to change this, but if you do not like the default for your personal name this is where you change it.
  • user-domain: iastate.edu
  • smtp-server: mailhub.iastate.edu
  • inbox-path: When you first select this item to change it, it will ask for "Name of Inbox server". Leave this blank and hit enter. It will then ask fof "Folder name to use for INBOX". Set this to /home/localusername/mail/inbox and hit enter. localusername is your username on your local machine.

When you are done, hit "E" to exit setup and tell it to save changes.

Using Pine

Run kfetchmail. This will download your mail. When it has finished, run pine. Your new mail will be in the INBOX.

Note: If you have configured kfetchmail to run in daemon mode, when you are done with Pine you should run the command kfetchmail --quit. If you have not configured kfetchmail to run in daemon mode, you will need to run kfetchmail whenever you want to get new mail --- Pine will not download it automatically.
